On September 6th, 2022, the Network Voices of the South presented the Shadow Report 2021, carried out and coordinated by all the organizations that make it up. The Shadow Report demonstrates the threats against journalists and media workers at a national and regional level, analyzes the state of freedom of expression, and calls on governments to respect these fundamental liberties, which are key for any democracy.

In 2021, 4,931 alerts of violations against freedom of expression, freedom of the press, and the right to access information were recorded in 14 countries. 60% of the countries saw an increase in alerts of violence against journalists and media workers.

States – supposed guarantees of these fundamental liberties – continue to be the main aggressor in violence against journalists and media throughout Latin America. At a regional level, the most worrying trend is the increase in direct violence against journalists and media, which has manifested itself in the worst way, homicide: 9 times in Mexico, and 1 time in Colombia, Guatemala, and Honduras. For the first time, the Shadow Report 2021 includes a gender and inclusion perspective, which analyzes how violence manifests differently against women, non-binary people, and the LGBTIQ+ community, and other groups.
